yesterday, a pregnant black woman, Charleena Lyles, called the police for help & they shot her 5 times & killed her in front of her 5 children. i will be with this & with the name of Nabra Hassenen today. i will be with the hearts & trembling hands of Charleena’s now motherless children. i will clean my studio. i will cry. i will say her name & make a painting of medicine in her name. i will eat. i will recreate this shooting in my mind. i will imagine it. i will imagine the unfathomability of it ricocheting like an electric madness through her children’s minds. i will sing the grief song for them. i will cry. i will light a lantern in her name, and in the name of Kala Thomas & in the name of Nabra Hassanen. it will not be enough. i will be with the truth of my immutable value. i will make 7 prayers to my ancestors. i will be with the truth of my immutable value. i will dance in the house of my innate & remarkable beauty. i will lay my forehead down to the table & i will sing the lifting up song. i will sing the human song in the key of twilight. i will sing the ocean song. it will be enuf to keep breathing. but it will not be enuf to bring her back. it will be enuf to stave off utter bitterness & disillusionment. but it will not be enuf for resurrection. (we are not safe here. my hands & my eyes will work to carve safety for us every place that they can.) i pray you safety & your own living language for love, & i sing to you a clarity of spirit that makes enuf space for all of these things.

hey, dont criticize our hero first responders.
It’s just tragic.
I still think that as long as these situations create more headlines than the dozens shot in Chicago alone every weekend, for example, most people won’t think that BLM is anything but hypocrisy.
So, gangbangers should be held to higher standards than cops?
You have dozens of cops shooting people in one city on one weekend, do you?

Yes. “Displayed a knife” is what it says. Not threatened. Displayed. Why didn’t they tase her? Why did they shoot her?
I agree with the taser part, but I can also imagine that since she was also mentally unstable, she did threaten the cops, enough to make them shoot instead of tasering or retreating.
All I can say is that I feel sorry for both the cops and the woman and I’m glad I don;t have to deal with these situations myself.
Being a cop in certain places is a job from hell.
