He must have been one proud papa, 4 of his kids all making a living playing the music he taught them

…and all four of them proudly racists, don’t forget.

I saw the two older ones together at a Jazz Festival in Portland in the 80’s, they didn’t turn their backs to the crowd, like Mile’s would have.

Beatles first bass player, Stu Sutcliffe, would turn his back to the crowd too. Mostly because he didn’t know what the fuck he was doing and didn’t want the crowd to see it. His GF at the time was the band’s photographer, Astrid Kerchherr, which is why he was in the band at all.

My fave story to tell is when my goddaughter was not yet two, the sister of her dad (my college buddy) was married to the playwright August Wilson, who had just passed away. They went to the funeral in NOLA, and the tot was fussing so her mom took her outside to fuss. Outside a trumpet player was warming up for the celebration, and he came over and played some little ditties and cheered the girl up. Once inside, during the procession, the mom turned to my pal and said “That’s the trumpet player who cheered our daughter up” and He replied “Really? That’s Winton Marsalis.”

Didn’t Stu die suddenly, like from a brain hemorrhage or something?

Yeah, and the rumor was it was from a beating Lennon gave him.

Evidently, Ray Brown was the only bass man he could get for this session.

I was going to make a snarky racist comment, but I chose not to.
