Rafer Johnson carried the American flag into Rome’s Olympic Stadium in August 1960 as the first Black captain of a United States Olympic team. He went on to win gold in decathlon and became a close associate of the Kennedy family. He died at 86, probably yesterday. I watched the Rome 1960 Olympics on TV, cutting some HS classes to catch some of the events.
