Who was James Armistead, you ask?

Posing as a runaway slave during the Revolutionary War, James Armistead acted as a double agent for the Continental Army and earned the trust of the British. The Redcoats were so sure that he couldn’t read or write that they left their written plans and maps in front of him. Armistead sent those reports to the Continental Army and they helped George Washington to win what would be the final battle of the Revolutionary War — but Armistead was still denied his freedom after the victory.

How violently American is that?

Sounds like part of the Culper Ring. If you haven’t watched it, the show Turn is about the ring.

I haven’t watched it, but it’s always been my impression that the Ring was entirely comprised of white guys.

There was a few black folk mixed in. Slaves that got moved that had loyalties to their old masters kinda thing.
