I learned my lesson… to listen to my father. 
I lost a serpentine belt on the freeway, and like my father suggested I put my old one in the trunk.
Threw it back on and cried about my brand new hood insulation and bulb/window breaking. Old one was replaced again with a Continental Gatorbacl and I haven’t had a problem since.
Losing your serpentine belt at 120 or so MPH is NOT fun!

Yes, having an engine that relies on a serpentine belt in the first place…may be a larger problem.
You shouldn’t be driving 120MPH in the first place.
