Just to quantify, viruses are as old as every species on the planet.
Outdoor, or underwater by their very nature.
In terms of mammals the viruses are transmitted usually in a much bigger chariot of droplets excreted, via all respiratory systems.
Transmission cannot be the same outside as in. However, wearing a mask at all times should be a safety net we all subscribe too, as the virus is perfectly capable of survival outside the human body, for extended periods of time. People will have been infected simply taking off their shoes for example.
Wearing a mask will not guarantee safety, but it will reduce your chance of infection from another person.
